35-year-old Kodai Hirijan has confessed to the murder of 10-year-old Jivan Kohar, after claiming a shaman (a person believed to possess magical or spiritual power to cure the sick) advised him that a human sacrifice would heal his ailing son. During police interrogation, Hirijan admitted to slitting the boy’s throat with a sickle to chase away the evil spirits from his 18-year-old son, who often falls ill. He confessed to luring 10-year-old Kohar away from his friends who were playing in the village by promising him a pack of biscuits and 50 rupees (49 cents).

The boy followed and was taken to a temple outside Kudiya village where a religious sacrifice was performed. After the sacrifice, he was then taken to a nearby field where he was held down by three people while Hirijan slit his throat.
Eleven people have been arrested for their involvement in the murder, including the shaman. The perpetrators are said to be facing a life sentence.
