Researchers have warned clouds of microscopic particles emitted from DIY jobs can be linked to heart disease. Also, dust emissions from sanding and grilling can lead to cancer when inhaled. Dr  Prashant Kumar, an environmental engineer, carried out 20 different building activities and collected and analyzed the dust created. So-called ultrafine particles, up to 70,000 times thinner than a human hair, made up 97 per cent of the particles in the dust. Their small size is thought to make them dangerous because it allows them to travel deep into the lungs, where they may trigger cancer.
Kumar said: ‘Some of the most harmful particles are invisible and we shouldn’t underestimate the effect on our health, and on the health of those around us.’
It is being reported that DIY jobs are on a rise as families are opting to mend, fix or extend their current homes themselves to save cost.
According to experts, face masks does not completely filters dust particles and thus wetting of walls and surfaces to trap dust ahead of work is highly advised.
