49-year-old Mousumi Dam from Kolkata, West Bengal, was for months suffering from acid reflux and severe abdominal pains until she got jaundice and finally went to see the doctor. Several tests and ultrasound revealed she was suffering from a severe case of gallstones that reportedly appeared like huge cluster of tiny marble-sized stones in her gallbladder.
Mousumi had to undergo surgery and the hour long operation resulted to surgeons removing 360 gall stones from her gallbladder. Dr. Makhan Lal Saha, professor of surgery at the hospital said in his 30 years working as a medical doctor, he has never seen so many stones in a patient before. He further explained that the reason for so many stones might have been due to the high amount of cholesterol in her bile. Also, the formation of stones can occur if a patient doesn't drink enough water.
Gallstones may be formed when there is too much cholesterol in the bile secreted by the liver or not enough bile salts. Bile usually dissolves of breaks down cholesterol but if your liver makes more cholesterol than your bile can dissolve, hard stones (gallstones) may develop.
